Warming up to World Cup madness! Malaysian Boleh!

Sunday, April 16, 2006

PETALING JAYA: There is still about two months to go for the greatest show on earth – the FIFA Football World Cup – but Malaysians are already gripped in soccer fever.
Football fans are already planning their schedule around the World Cup in Germany from June 9 to July 9.
Many have submitted leave applications, especially for the second half of the tournament in late June and early July, when the action heats up with the quarter-finals.

LCD and plasma television screens are also high on the list of World Cup necessities with football fans. Retailers and manufacturers have taken the cue, with many advertising special offers on LCD and plasma televisions.

Some are giving discounts of up to RM2,000, besides throwing in free gifts and competitions, where the winner gets to go to Germany to watch the matches.

Food outlets and nightspots are also planning ahead for the World Cup, investing in television sets and satellite TV subscriptions to draw the crowd for live telecasts late in the nights and early mornings in Malaysia.

Employers, however, are saying that work must go on during the World Cup and have urged workers to not come in late to work.

“Record the matches and watch them later or before coming to work” is their advice to football fans. ~~The Star Malaysia

UN, EU, German government and FIFA, united in the fight against racism

Representatives of the United Nations, the European Union, the German government, FIFPro, FARE, the 2006 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee Germany and FIFA met today, 28 March 2006, in Zurich to analyse the recent measures adopted by FIFA in the fight against racism and discrimination in football and to examine the activities planned in this regard during the FIFA World Cup™ in Germany this summer.

"Racism has, for far too long, been damaging the beautiful game we love. We have always adopted a firm stance against this plague, and recently the FIFA Executive Committee approved an amendment to the FIFA Disciplinary Code to impose stricter sanctions, including suspensions, point deductions and disqualification, to punish racist incidents. Now that we have the instruments, together, the football family can work to combat racism and discrimination," stated the FIFA President, who opened the meeting.

"The initiatives adopted by the European Parliament and FIFA are crucial steps in the elimination of racism not only in football, but in European society in general. Football's popularity offers a unique opportunity to tackle racism and discrimination in all its forms", underlined Emine Bozkurt, a member of the European Parliament.

The participants in the meeting acknowledged the strict sanctions against racism and any form of discrimination approved by the FIFA Executive Committee as well as the European Parliament Declaration on tackling racism in football, and expressed their belief that they would contribute to eradicating racism from football once and for all.

Mexico leave talented Blanco out of World Cup squad

Mexico leave talented Blanco out of World Cup squad

MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s gifted but volatile forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco will miss this summer’s World Cup Finals after being omitted from coach Ricardo La Volpe’s provisional 26-man squad on Sunday.

But 37-year-old defender Claudio Suarez, who has won 174 caps, and veteran midfielder Jesus Arellano were surprise inclusions in the list from which La Volpe will choose his final 23 players.

Suarez’s appearances under La Volpe have been restricted mainly to friendlies and the 2004 Copa America in Peru, while the 32-year-old Arellano’s presence had been in doubt after he played little part in Mexico’s qualifying campaign.

Blanco, as famous for his scintillating skill as his unpredictable temperament, is widely viewed as one of Mexico’s most creative players ever and speculation about his exclusion
had been a long-running saga.

Perhaps best remembered for the outrageous “bunny-hopping” between defenders with the ball lodged between his ankles, Blanco played in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

However, since pulling out of Mexico’s squad on the eve of last year’s Confederations Cup saying he needed a rest, La Volpe has picked him only once.

Even before he became coach in 2002 there was speculation about La Volpe’s relationship with the 33-year-old Blanco as the pair had frequent clashes when they were on opposite sides in club games.

Blanco was in excellent form in the second half of last year but became involved in a public slanging match with La Volpe, saying the coach did not have the courage to pick him. But a loss of form and injuries this year weakened his case.

La Volpe has also been criticised in some quarters for his policy of picking naturalised players.

The coach included two naturalised players – striker Guillermo Franco, who was born in Argentina, and Brazilian-born midfielder Antonio Naelson – in the squad.

Mexico were surprisingly chosen as one of the eight seeds for the Finals and will play Portugal, Angola and Iran in Group D.

THE SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Oswaldo Sanchez, Guillermo Ochoa, Jesus Corona.

Defenders: Jose Antonio Castro, Rafael Marquez, Mario Mendez, Ricardo Osorio, Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Salcido, Joel Huiqui, Claudio Suarez, Andres Guardado, Gonzalo Pineda.

Midfielders: Luis Perez, Pavel Pardo, Antonio Naelson, Rafael Garcia, Jaime Lozano, Jesus Arellano, Israel Lopez, Gerardo Torrado, Ramon Morales.

Forwards: Jared Borgetti, Guillermo Franco, Francisco Fonseca, Omar Bravo. – Reuters

Deadline for submitting list of 23 players remains 15 May 2006

Meeting of the Bureau of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ The 32 participating associations at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ will be obliged to submit their list of 23 players by 15 May at the very latest. This decision was confirmed by the Bureau of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ at its meeting in Zurich today.

During the World Cup workshop in Düsseldorf from 6 to 8 March, several associations had requested postponement of the deadline for naming the final squad. Under the chairmanship of FIFA vice-president Lennart Johansson (Sweden), the committee reaffirmed an earlier decision. This course of action is intended to afford the players concerned adequate recovery time, although injured players may be replaced after this date following a specific procedure. The decision is also intended to avoid falsification of domestic competitions. The FIFA executive body’s decision to allow an adequate relaxation period for the players chosen for the World Cup concerns every competition and club involving these footballers. Granting a larger squad and a later deadline for the definitive list of players would mean that any players who were not then taken into account would be missing from their clubs.

In the fight against illegal betting, the Bureau confirmed that every player, official and match official would be required to sign a declaration before the World Cup, pledging not to take part in betting of any kind in connection with the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ matches. This action is one of the many precautions recently passed by the Working Group for Financial Matters of the Task Force "For the Good of the Game".

Citing Law 3, the Bureau furthermore declined the request to allow more than six substitutions to be made in friendly matches played in the run-up to the World Cup. Another request to allow more than one person to give instructions simultaneously in the technical zone was also rejected. The committee was of the opinion that the Laws had to be observed and that no exception should be made for the World Cup.

On the other hand, the Bureau agreed to a proposal from several associations to allow for the number of officials receiving accreditation to be raised from 45 to 50. However, FIFA will bear the costs of no more than 45 persons per delegation, in accordance with the World Cup regulations.

Furthermore, the committee noted the media guidelines announced to the teams at the workshop in Düsseldorf. These guidelines will now be sent to the 32 associations concerned in the form of a circular.
