Warming up to World Cup madness! Malaysian Boleh!

Sunday, April 16, 2006

PETALING JAYA: There is still about two months to go for the greatest show on earth – the FIFA Football World Cup – but Malaysians are already gripped in soccer fever.
Football fans are already planning their schedule around the World Cup in Germany from June 9 to July 9.
Many have submitted leave applications, especially for the second half of the tournament in late June and early July, when the action heats up with the quarter-finals.

LCD and plasma television screens are also high on the list of World Cup necessities with football fans. Retailers and manufacturers have taken the cue, with many advertising special offers on LCD and plasma televisions.

Some are giving discounts of up to RM2,000, besides throwing in free gifts and competitions, where the winner gets to go to Germany to watch the matches.

Food outlets and nightspots are also planning ahead for the World Cup, investing in television sets and satellite TV subscriptions to draw the crowd for live telecasts late in the nights and early mornings in Malaysia.

Employers, however, are saying that work must go on during the World Cup and have urged workers to not come in late to work.

“Record the matches and watch them later or before coming to work” is their advice to football fans. ~~The Star Malaysia
